Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the key theoretical tools for understanding the fundamental elements and transformations of communication processes, alongside the specific dynamics of the contemporary media landscape. By the end of the module, students will have acquired the basic skills required for the study of communication and media, with a particular focus on the sociological approach; they will be familiar with the key elements characterising the rise of digital media; and they will possess the skills to link communication ecosystems to issues affecting society at large.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

Teaching will take the form of lectures and seminars, with a particular focus on discussion and direct dialogue with the students.

Assessment Methods

The written examination lasts one hour and consists of three open-ended questions which require a thorough study of the texts listed in the bibliography. Each answer is marked out of 30; to pass, students must achieve a score of at least 18/30 across all questions.

For students whose study programme includes the ‘THEORIES OF COMMUNICATION AND DIGITAL MEDIA’ examination (code 92169, 12 CFU), the module ‘THEORIES OF COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA’ [92169-MOD1] is combined with the module ‘SOCIOLOGY OF DIGITAL MEDIA’ [92169-MOD2].

The two-hour examination covering both modules must be taken on the same day, and the final mark will be calculated as the average of the marks obtained in each individual module.

To pass the 12 CFU examination, students must achieve a pass mark in both modules.

The teaching staff reserves the right to request a supplementary oral examination, even after the written examination has taken place, should this be deemed necessary in order to assess whether students have effectively acquired the knowledge and skills set out in the course learning outcomes and to ensure that marks are awarded correctly.

Contents

The course is divided into two parts. The first part introduces students to the theories and research developed within media studies to understand communication processes. The second part is devoted to the study of the landscape opened up by digital media and to the analysis of contemporary social and cultural transformations sustained by digital mediation.
