Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to train students in the use of computational modeling tools based on the numerical solution of the flow governing equations, with applications to computational hemodynamics. A basic understanding of the solution strategy will be provided, and the concepts of approximate solution and asymptotic convergence toward the exact solution will be addressed. Furthermore, the course will focus on the computational modeling capabilities, namely the ability to quantify hemodynamic parameters of interest that may be useful for studying a pathology or predicting the outcome of surgical interventions, as well as on the limitations associated with the use of simulation in the biomedical field, namely the need to quantify the impact of anatomical, constitutive, and operational uncertainty on the quantities of interest.

By the end of the course, students

  • autonomously select the most correct and appropriate simplifying assumptions to model real-world problems in fluid mechanics (e.g., steady, pulsatile, incompressible, rigid walls, fluid-structure interaction)
  • identify the inputs and outputs of the mathematical model
  • determine the most suitable boundary conditions
  • assess the uncertainty of data prescribed on the computational domain boundaries
  • master the computational hemodynamics workflow
  • assess the numerical and analytical results, evaluating their validity and physical consistency

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of fluid mechanics, physics and mathematics

Teaching Methods

Students will engage in a combination of frontal lectures, collaborative team-based projects, and continuous support to perform computational hemodynamics studies. The teaching methods include:

  • Frontal Lectures: The course will begin with a series of frontal lectures to provide students with a solid theoretical foundation. These lectures will cover the fundamentals of methods and tools for computational hemodynamics. Attendance at all lectures is mandatory, as they provide the essential knowledge required to successfully complete the subsequent practical and project-based activities.
  • Team-Based Project Development: students will work in teams to develop comprehensive projects related to computational hemodynamics. This collaborative approach encourages peer learning, idea exchange, and the development of essential teamwork skills.
  • Regular Meetings with Professors: scheduled meetings with professors will guide the teams through the project's lifecycle. These sessions will address project aims, provide deeper theoretical background, and impart specific knowledge relevant to the project activities. Professors will ensure that students understand key concepts and methodologies necessary for project success.

Assessment Methods

The assessment of the project outcomes, the knowledge acquired, and the competencies developed will be carried out at the end of the course through a group report and an oral presentation, during which each member of the group will present their individual contribution to the project. The assessment will take into account the team's ability to communicate the achieved results effectively, demonstrate the technical competencies acquired, and highlight the practical application of the solutions developed throughout the project.

Contents

The course will cover the following topics

  • flow governing equations
  • pulsatile flow and compliance
  • introduction to computational hemodynamics
  • modeling of fluid-structure interaction
  • introduction to uncertainty quantification
  • computational hemodynamics practical sessions
