Banāt al-barārī de Mahā Ḥasan : corps et fantastique

The article analyzes the novel Banāt al-barārī (2011) by the Syrian writer Mahā Ḥasan. In this novel, the emphasis is put on the body, which is considered the metaphorical location of the individual’s struggle to assert his/her rights in a traditional society. The body is the site of the negotiation between individual and collective claims. Mahā Ḥasan deals with honor crimes to represent different sorts of oppression which don’t involve only women but also men, within their society. The author represents the phenomenon of such a terrible crime as an honor crime through the fantastic theory genre, relying upon it to place the location of the body between the collective sphere (society) and nature. Nature becomes a metaphorical space where the “desiring subject” tries to assert him/herself rejecting the role of the “subdued” imposed on him/her by his/her community.
