Abstract:
The paper is about Sergej Ivanovič Zarudnyj, one of the central figures of Tsar Alexander II’s great reforms. Descendant of a family of Cossack starshyna from Sloboda Ukraine, Zarudnyj had a brillant career in the capital city of the Empire as an engaged reformer of the backward Russian legal system. His cultural origins, his family’s history and his education at Kharkiv University deeply affected his translation work and his legal discourse, both intended to introduce and spread in the Russian Empire the products of Italian legal culture.
