Abstract:
The twelfth-century theological debates which developed into Latin Europe were deeply connected with the Mediterranean cultural and religious framework. Beside the contact with Islam, it was the confrontation with the Greek-speaking world that influenced the Latin Church’s development of the discussion on several crucial issues, such as the Trinity and the two natures of Christ. The dialogues between Greek and Latin Church were the framework of the activity of Burgundio da Pisa and Ugo Eteriano. Both these figures, originating from Pisa, played a crucial role in the transfer of theological and philosophical texts from Greek into Latin, but they were also directly involved in the history of the doctrinal confrontation between the Churches of Rome and Constantinople. The essay deals with these aspects, suggesting the need to replace Burgundio’s and Ugo’s intellectual engagement in the broader framework of the interreligious connections of the twelfth-century Mediterranean area.
