Abstract:
This paper analyses passages from the novel Emil und die Detektive, in its two official Italian
translations, that are representative of feigned orality and its interweaving with idiomatics as well
as diaphasic and diastratic variation; special attention is paid to the creativity of the different
versions. It turns out that the variation markedness tends to be preserved, especially in idiomatic
passages, through creative and compensatory procedures as well as the shifting of markedness
to other language or variation levels. Standardisation, on the other hand, occurs in syntactic and
phonetic completions. Creativity is also used to strengthen propositional contents, render communicative phraseologisms and approach target culture. Less creative, but still examples of
interventionism, are explicative and interpretative additions; the older translation in particular often
moves away from source text, but also presents many neutralisations, in line with the preference
of that time for naturalising target texts and the lower sensitivity to language variation.
