Abstract:
Cities are living entities, continuously evolving through the interplay of history, culture, art, and architecture. The built environment not only reflects societal values but also shapes the collective memory and identity of urban spaces. This book, Cities’ Identity: The Innovative Dialogue Between Art and Architecture, brings together a diverse collection of research exploring how architecture and artistic expression contribute to the formation, transformation, and preservation of city identities across the globe.
The chapters included in this volume are selected papers from the Cities’ Identity through Architecture and Arts (CITAA 2024) conference, an event that has brought together distinguished specialists in architecture, urban planning, heritage preservation, and artistic disciplines. The contributions span multiple continents, presenting case studies from cities such as Beirut, Manila, Lisbon, Tripoli, Xi’an, and many more. This global perspective allows for a
comparative analysis of how different cultures engage with their architectural heritage while embracing contemporary innovations. Several key themes emerge throughout this book. One is the tension between heritage preservation and modernization, as seen in studies of historic urban landscapes, adaptive reuse, and conservation efforts in cities like Milan, Palermo, and Baghdad. Another is the role of artistic interventions in shaping urban identity, with discussions on photography, installations, and digital media influencing public perception of architectural spaces. Additionally, the book examines sustainability and inclusivity in urban design, highlighting efforts to integrate ecological consciousness and social equity into architectural practices.
Through this collection, readers will gain a deeper understanding of how cities use architecture and the arts as tools for identity-making, social connection, and cultural storytelling. We hope this volume inspires scholars, practitioners, and city planners to further explore the dynamic relationship between architecture, art, and the evolving identity of urban spaces.
