Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students of TESEA the knowledge that allow them to understand and deal with issues related to energy production and conversion in a professional context, including the aspect of environmental impact present in all industrial sectors. The course will offer a broad-spectrum overview of the technologies currently most used for the conversion of primary energy sources (renewable and non-renewable) into electrical and thermal energy.

In particular, the course focuses its attention on three main aspects:

1. Understanding the interactions between energy systems and the environment.

2. Acquiring knowledge of technologies for the control and mitigation of environmental impact in energy systems.

3. Applying environmental impact assessment methodologies specific to the energy sector.

Course Prerequisites

Thermal Physics

Teaching Methods

The course will be delivered using a theoretical and practical approach including design aspects.

Assessment Methods

The assessment method consists of a written test with exercises followed by an oral exam.

Contents

1. Recall of principles of energy conversion, thermodynamic foundations and analysis of energy cycles:

2. Electric power generation plants: Steam power plants.

3. Electric power generation plants: Organic fluid cycles (ORC).

4. Electric power generation plants: gas turbines.

5. Electric power generation plants: Combined cycle gas turbines.

6. Basic notions of cogeneration assets of power plants.

7. Refrigeration systems.

8. Renewable energy plants: Solar, Hydroelectric and Wind

9. Basic notions on the assessment of the environmental impact of products and processes, with particular attention to the components of noise, atmosphere and water environment.

10. Environmental issues related to the generation and use of energy, with particular attention to the effects on the environment deriving from conventional and renewable energy systems.

11. Formation of pollutants and containment techniques.
