Syllabus

Course Objectives

Firstly, the course aims to provide knowledge on management control techniques. The student acquires the following practical skills: calculation of the full cost of the product / service, calculation of the incremental cost, analysis of cost variances, indirect cost allocation.
The course also aims to provide knowledge on techniques to support management decision-making. The student acquires the following practical skills: classification of customers, products and suppliers, based on profit margins and possible actions for each group, planning of incentive schemes.
The course contributes to the educational objectives of the program (SUA-CdS A4.b2), in particular as regards the economic-management area

Teaching Methods

Teaching activities are mainly by frontal lessons and exercise sessions, with particular attention to the confrontation and direct dialogue with the students, who can, during the lessons, formulate proposals for discussion.
During the course there will be meetings with qualified experts aimed at analyzing the methodologies and applications of the management control systems

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written exam and an oral exam.
The written exam is compulsory and consists of two numerical exercises and three open questions about the theoretical aspects of the course content. The students obtaining a sufficient score in the written exam (at least 18/30 ) can directly register the vote achieved.
The oral exam is optional for students who have achieved at least 18/30 in the written exam. The oral exam consists of 3-4 open questions on all aspects of the course (pass score of 18/30). In this case, the overall grade of the examination is the arithmetic average of the marks obtained in the written test and in the oral exam.

Contents

1. Aims and characteristics of management control systems (Accounting e Management)
The components of a system of management control, the requirements and specifications for decision support, motivation and organizational learning. The nature and objectives of management accounting.

2. The techniques of costing (Accounting)
Introduction to the concept of Cost Object. Difference between the techniques of full costing and variable costing and allocation of indirect costs. Traditional techniques of costing: Job Order Costing vs. Process Costing. Advanced techniques of costing and allocation of indirect costs, allocation of costs by service centers to production centers. Activity-based costing, Target Pricing and Target Costing. Simplified Accounting Systems such as Lean Accounting and Just in Time Costing.

3. The process of budgeting and variance analysis (Accounting)
Strategic planning and budget setting: the difference between short and long term budget. From corporate vision to budgeting. Management and control by objectives. The process of budgeting: operating budget, budget, investment, financial budget, master budget. The negotiation of the budget. Techniques for preparation of a revised budget. The variance analysis.

4- Tools to guide decision-making (Management)
Costs for orientation of decision-making. Activity Based Management: pricing and product mix decisions, supplier selection process and client evaluation. The Balanced Scorecard: objectives, realization of the model and analysis of financial, customer relations, efficiency of processes and elements for growth. Presentation of economic and financial information.

5- Management Compensation Systems (Management)
Characteristics of incentive-based compensation plans. Distinction between short-and long-term incentives. Types of incentives: criteria for performance evaluation and calculation of the premium. Basic concepts of agency theory.
