Syllabus

Course Objectives

The student acquires the basic knowledge to solve statically indeterminate frames and continuous beams, with reference to both analytical and approximated methods. By the end of the module, the student understands the static behavior of framed structures and is able to design simple steel structural elements and bidimensional elements.

Teaching Methods

The course takes advantage and is part of the innovative teaching project “On Solid Foundations”, aimed at fostering solid training and gap-less through flexible and modular training courses, that the student can select based on the personal background and cognitive skills, and the level of preparation, enabling the most motivated student the access to excellence learning paths.

The course will be structured with frontal lectures and exercises, with particular attention to foster proactivity and direct participation of the students. Flipped classroom, as well as individual and group challenges will be offered throughout the course.

The students will benefit from a specific web-portal with additional materials, for further training at home. To verify learning, the students can use a series of self-assessment tests that will allow them to identify and fill any gaps in order to promote progressive learning “On Solid Foundations”.


Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test and an oral test.

In the 2-hour written test the students is asked to solve a planar frame using the direct stiffness method and the design of a steel beam or a connection, or a beam on elastic foundation.

Once the written test is passed, the student will have to pass a comprehensive oral exam covering the topics of the course.

The grade of the Module is the algebric average of the grades obtained in the two parts of the exam (written and oral test).

1. Conceptual design of structural elements


2. Methods for the structural analysis of statically indeterminate frames:

2.1. Mohr theorem and its applications.

2.2. Elastic curve (second and forth derivative)

2.3. Flexibility and stiffness methods.

3. Design of simple steel structural elements:

3.1. Material properties.

3.2. Proportioning and design of elements with respect to resistance and deformability criteria.

3.3. Design and detailing of bolted and welded connections.

3.4. Buckling

3.5. Structural detailing


4. Other structure

4.1. Statics of the beam on elastic foundation (Winkler theory)

4.2. Statics of bidimensional elements (plates and shells)
