Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (23/02/2026 - 06/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides a comprehensive overview on the architecture of an electrical power system and its main components

The students will gain a full understanding of the working principles ruling the main electrical machines (i.e., transformers, DC machines, induction machines and synchronous machines) as well as their application fields.

Skills on the power electronic converters analysis (i.e., DC/DC, DC/AC, AC/DC and AC/AC converters) will be developed through direct and indirect purposeful activities. The ability of recognizing the power converter schemes and control techniques will also be acquired.

Course Prerequisites

Mathematical Analysis (complex number, trigonometric functions, Fourier series)

Electrical Engineering basic concepts (Ohm’s Law, Kirchhoff’s Lows, phase and phase-to-phase quantities)

Teaching Methods

Face-to-face lectures supported by Power Point presentations will be held.

Support material will be provided at the beginning of the course.

Attendance is not compulsory although it is strongly advised.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists in a written examination, which includes theory questions (open-ended questions). Every question will feature a score associated to its complexity level and each question’s score is going to be indicated.

The test is considered successful if the score is higher than 18 over 30.

Contents

The course is composed by three main modules:

  1. Electrical Power System: Architecture, Power Plants and Renewable Energy Source, Power Lines (overhead and cable power lines), Over-currents (overload and short-circuit), Protection Devices (fuse, miniature circuit breaker), Electrical Shock and Human Body, Indirect Contact (RCD)
  2. Electrical Machine: Reversible principle, Faraday Law, Lorentz Force, Power Flow and Efficiency, Transformer (working principle, classification, manufacturing features, equivalent circuit, tests), DC Machine (working principle, manufacturing features), Induction machine (working principle, manufacturing features), Synchronous machine (working principle, manufacturing features),
  3. Power Converters: Semiconductor Device (Diode, Thyristor, IGBT, MOSFET), AC/DC Converters (controlled and uncontrolled, single-phase and three-phase rectifiers), DC/DC Converters (Buck, Boost and Buck/Boost Converters, First Quadrant Chopper, Two-Quadrant Chopper, Four-Quadrant Chopper), DC/AC Converters (Six-Step Inverter, Sinusoidal PWM Inverter, Space Vector Modulation), AC/AC Converters (Voltage Regulators, Cycloconverters, Active Front End)
