Syllabus

Course Objectives

By the end of the course students will have acquired a thorough knowledge of the theoretical factors underlying: the rationale for public sector intervention; the suitability of the tools employed both from a revenue and expenditure perspective; the boundaries of public intervention and its main effects on income distribution and on the functioning of the economic system; the mechanisms of political decision for public intervention. In addition, students will gain specific knowledge about these topics with reference to the Italian context, also in relation to the territorial organization of the government and the decentralized finance system. This knowledge will provide students with the fundamentals required to understand the role of the public administration and its impact on institutional, social, economic and territorial systems, both in Italy and in the international context. This will offer a better grasp and interpretation of the dynamics at work and will allow a more rapid analysis which translates into effective decisions, independently from the working context (public or private). This body of knowledge will also be invaluable to any students who decide to pursue their studies to a higher level.

Course Prerequisites

Compulsory prerequisites required (Propedeuticità) are published on the web site.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will take the form of lectures and will be highly interactive. Students will be encouraged during the lectures to contribute with proposals for further investigation and debate.

Assessment Methods

The final exam will be written, 60 minutes for 6 CFU and 90 minutes for 9 CFU. The written exam will consist of some open questions and/or exercises and it will be marked out of thirty points. The procedure and content of the exam will be the same for both attending and non-attending students.
