Students learn the working of the labour market by studying the interacting choices of individuals and firms, set within the institutional
context, i.e. the ground rules, which prevail where they live and operate.
The labour market is central to the functioning of the economic system and to the policies dealing with most socio-economic issues. Both the
facts about the labour market and the theories that can explain the facts are parts of the course, together with the ability to test theories using
basic statistics and econometrics. The course then examines various policy issues, like welfare programs, wage inequality, unemployment,
automation, discrimination, immigration, human capital.
