Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides an introduction to the main theories and empirical evidence on the determinants of economic growth and development. Students will develop the ability to work with basic theoretical models (ranging from the Solow growth model to endogenous growth models) and acquire the tools to frame and discuss a range of contemporary issues related to the processes of countries' growth and sustainable development (including the role of technological change, human capital, population, institutions, climate change, and financial integration).

Those required by the degree program.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a 75-minute written test, including open-ended questions and exercises.

It will assess both the knowledge of economic growth theories covered during the course and the ability to reflect analytically and rigorously on the determinants of growth and development processes.

The format and content of the exam will be the same for attending and non-attending students.

The main topics covered in the course are:

  • Main stylized facts of economic growth.
  • Different versions of the Solow growth model.
  • Theoretical and empirical elements related to economic convergence.
  • The neoclassical growth model with human capital.
  • The overlapping generations model.
  • Introduction to the economics of ideas and knowledge.
  • AK models.
  • Romer (1990) and Jones (1995) models.
  • The role of population dynamics in long-run economic growth.
  • The role of formal and informal institutions in economic growth and development.
  • The role of climate change and renewable and non-renewable energy resources for sustainable growth.
  • The role of financial integration and development in economic growth.
