Syllabus

Course Objectives

The objectives of the course are:


to provide a basic knowledge of the history of Italian journalism in the contemporary age

to provide an advanced knowledge of post-war Italian journalism

to provide the ability to place a given newspaper in its geographical and chronological context

to provide the ability to place a given author in his geographical and chronological context

to provide the ability to critically read a newspaper article

to provide the ability to analyze multiple articles in parallel or in their diachronic development


Course Prerequisites

Students must have a minimum knowledge of:


  • the history of Italy in the twentieth century
  • the mechanisms of mass communication

Teaching Methods

The course will be structured around lectures, combined with laboratory activities, including collective readings of texts, written exercises, and research.


Assessment Methods

The exam will consist of an oral test, accompanied by the preliminary elaboration of a short original written text (8,000 characters).


Contents

The course will deal with the post-war press, through a chronological articulation (post-war, reconstruction and cold war, economic boom, age of movements, protest, crisis and terrorism, Berlusconi years, end of the "first republic", end of the century) and thematic (partisan and allied press, political newspapers, generalist newspapers, cultural magazines, popular periodicals, counter-information, sports journalism, economic journalism, Catholic press, women's press).


There will also be some basic information on the history of other media.
