Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students are able to understand the ethical issues related to the different types of communicative exchange that happen in the social space, including exchanges that are mediated by the use of digital media and social networks; they have mastered the main concepts of communication ethics and become familiar with the most important forms of moral reasoning applicable to the communicative dimension of life.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

The teaching activity includes lectures with the involvement of students through reflections and discussions of current issues related to communication ethics.

Assessment Methods

The examination consists of a written test lasting 60 minutes, comprising two sets of open-ended questions. The first set, consisting of approximately three questions, concerns the textbook material; the second set, consisting of approximately four additional questions, focuses on the monographic part of the course.

Each of the two sections will be assigned a score on a scale of thirty; the final grade will be the average of the scores obtained. However, in order to pass the exam, students must achieve a minimum score of 18/30 in each of the two sections.

The test is designed to assess:

  • knowledge and understanding of the concepts;
  • depth of study;
  • ability to summarise and synthesise;
  • ability to establish connections between topics.

In evaluating the answers, the following criteria will be considered: the completeness and relevance of the content; the clarity of argumentation; precision in the use of terminology; the ability to personally elaborate on the topics; grammatical and syntactic accuracy; and richness of expression.

Contents

The initial set of lectures will be devoted to an examination of the concept of “communicative responsibility,” with particular reference to Emmanuel Lévinas’s account of the relationship between language and ethics. The following lectures will address in greater depth the ethical challenges involved in the communication of consent and dissent within intimate relationships.

More information

During the course, some of the texts to be prepared for the exam will be discussed in class: attendance therefore allows for a more complete preparation and is recommended. However, neither attendance nor the study of notes can replace the personal work of reading and analyzing the texts.

Non-attending students will bring the same syllabus as attending students; however, since they will not have their own notes taken in class, they will resort to some supplementary texts that will be indicated in the e-Learning/Moodle area of the course.

All students are required to periodically consult the e-learning area of the course and download the indicated materials.

Erasmus students and students with PDPs or IEPs are asked to make contact with the lecturer at the beginning of the courses.
