Assessment Methods

The exams will be held in written form and will be based on 5 open questions (on the manual and monograph) to be answered in 2 hours. The evaluation is expressed in thirtieths (6 points per question).

The evaluation criteria will take into account the following elements: relevance and completeness of the answers; mastery of the concepts and rigor in their use; critical skills and richness of arguments; clarity of presentation and ownership of language; correctness in terms of syntax and grammar.

Attending students can agree with the professor on a short essay (around 30.000 characters), in full or partial substitution to the written exam.

Contents

The course will present the essential elements of the reflection that the social sciences have developed on cities and urbanization.

The lessons will therefore deal with both theoretical reflections and empirical analyses, from the origins of urban sociology up to some fundamental issues concering contemporary cities.

In particular, the course will be structured on two levels: one relating to the representations of the city and its inhabitants and one relating to the political and economic dynamics of its development. A specific focus will be devoted to the role of philanthropic actors in the development, the government and the study of the city.
