Syllabus

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be familiar with the intellectual and social origins of the discipline, as well as its most important theoretical traditions. Furthermore, they will have mastered the main conceptual and methodological tools required to apply the discipline to the analysis of relevant aspects of contemporary science and technological development. Finally, they will know how to communicate and interact with both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Teaching Methods

The teaching will combine frontal lessons associated with practical activities, such as cooperative learning and discussion of cases carried out by students individually and in groups, aimed at understanding the increasing complexity of managing the relationship among science, technology, and society.


Assessment Methods

The final evaluation is based on a written exam with 3 open questions, to be answered in 1h. Each question will be evaluated from 0 to 10 points.

The final vote is expressed in thirtieths.

The objective of the exam is to verify the knowledge acquired by the student, his/her critical skills, and the ability to structure a correct text in Italian. The evaluation criteria include completeness and relevance, clarity of the argumentation, language skills, the ability to synthesize and re-elaborate the questions, grammatical and syntactic correctness, richness of the exposition.


Contents

The course aims to provide the main knowledge necessary to analyse the network of relationships among science, technology, and society from a sociological perspective.

The first part of the course introduces the different concepts of science, the relationship between scientific and common sense knowledge, between science and values, the problem of the observer, the concepts of truth and method, the logic of scientific discoveries, making reference to main paradigms present in the contemporary debate such as positivism, neo-positivism, realism, relativism, systemics, and their relative exponents (e.g. Popper, Kuhn, Feyerabend, Hanson, Collins and Latour).

The most recent studies relating to the Science Technology and Society (STS) sector are also presented, with particular attention to the problem of communication and public understanding of scientific knowledge and the relationship between science and technology.

The second part of the course is dedicated to the discussion and participatory presentation of some scientific controversies, with the direct involvement of the students who will participate, through individual and group role-playing games based on concrete cases, to support the different positions and paradigms illustrated in the first part of the course.
