At the end of the course the student is able to recognize the styles and forms of audiovisual language; analyse the technical-expressive aspects of cinema; to use the specific vocabulary of film studies; frame the evolution and functions of audiovisual language theoretically.
Interest in film culture; willingness to watch and discuss classic and contemporary films.
The course is delivered through lectures that involve the active participation of students in practical and applied activities. The teaching path is supported by the viewing and in-depth analysis of selected film sequences. The instructor provides weekly learning materials, supporting resources, and exercises for each topic through the university’s e-learning platforms.
Students will be offered the opportunity to take part in optional extracurricular activities aligned with the course content (e.g., serving on film festival juries; participating in university film clubs).
The evaluation is assessed individually. The student must demonstrate a complete knowledge of the course contents, bibliography and filmography. The evaluation test consists of two parts:
1) a 30-questions multiple choice quiz (30’)
2) a written commentary to a film (60’)
The final grade is expressed out of 30 and is calculated as the average of the two partial grades. For the students taking the module in combination with an other module, the final grade consists of the average of the grades of the two single modules. The exams of the two modules must be taken in the same session or at least in two consecutive sessions.
The module offers a basic knowledge of language of cinema in its historical evolution and its theoretical and technological implications. The module deals with the aspects of mise-en-scène, shot composition, editing, sound, and narrative structures in cinema.
The official channel of communication between the instructor and the students is the university e-leaning platform. It is mandatory to check the e-learning platform on a weekly basis. The e-learning platform includes didactic materials and further recommended films and readings. In addition to the exam bibliography, a mandatory filmography is made available by the instructor.
The exam program is the same for both attending and non-attending students. Erasmus and PDP or PEI students are invited to get in contact with the instructor at the beginning of the course.
