Overview

Date/time interval

Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of this course the student will know the general development of Greek Literature, through the exam of its main authors, texts, literary and performative contexts. The student learns how to analyze literary texts under the linguistic and thematic point of view, with an interdisciplinary key. He can apply the method to specific case studies.

Course Prerequisites

None. The knowledge of Greek Language is not requested.

Teaching Methods

Lectures. Lectures will be integrated by visits to museums and exhibitions, theatre shows, and conferences held by external experts.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam. Those who pass the written test do not need to present the Greek literature handbook, but only the texts, that are the objects of the course and indicated in the programme. Students are requested to know the texts in the programme and read in class (for attending students; for non-attending students there will be alternative texts). Students are also requested to know the Introductions and commentaries to the recommended editions. Marks are in thirties.

Contents

Human, men, gods

The course will examine, with a diachronic survey of some of the most relevant authors of the Archaic (Homer, Hesiod) and Classical age (Herodotus, the tragic poets), the relationship between human and divine, also through the confrontation with other Mediterranean and Near Eastern Cultures. Particular attention will be given to sacred spaces and ritual practices (sacrifices, oracles, religious festivals), as a form of communication between men (and women) and gods.

Texts by Greek authors are read in Italian translation.
