Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (15/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides a comprehensive overview on the laws that rule the electric circuit’s operating conditions. The students will acquire the essential skills to solve an electric circuit working in steady-state, in sinusoidal regime and transient.

Course Prerequisites

Mathematical Analysis (complex number, vectors, first and second order differential equations), Physic (Electromagnetism)

Teaching Methods

Face-to-face lectures supported by Power Point presentations and applicative examples.

Exercises consisting in solving electric circuits operating in different working conditions (DC current, AC current, Transient).

Assessment Methods

The exam will consist of a written examination (i.e., exercises) and every exercise will feature a score.

The written examination is considered successful in case a mark higher than 18 over 30 is achieved.

Contents

The course is made by six modules:

  1. Generalities: Material Classification for Electrical Engineering, The International System of Units (Metric System), Voltage and current, Resistance and resistivity, Electric Field, Capacitor and Capacitance, Magnetic Field, Inductor and Inductance, Kirchhoff’s Current Law, Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law, Ohm’s Law
  2. Direct Current Circuits: Electrical Components, Series and Parallel Connections, Thevenin Theorem, Norton Theorem, Millman Theorem, Superposition principle, Voltage and Current Divider, DC Electric Power
  3. Magnetic Circuits: Magnetic Field and Magnetic Quantities, Magnetic Materials, Magnetization Curve (B-H Curve), Hopkinson’s Law, Series and Parallel Connections, Self- and Mutual Induction, Faraday-Lentz’s
  4. Single-Phase AC Circuits: Sinusoidal waveform and phasor, Ohm’s Law, Impedance and Admittance, Series and Parallel Connections, AC Electric Power, Boucherot Law, Power Factor Correction
  5. Three-Phase AC Circuits: Three-Phase System Benefits, Wye and Delta Connections, Symmetrical Three-Phase System with 3 Conductors, Symmetrical Three-Phase System with 4 Conductors, Three-Phase Electric Power, Power Factor Correction
