Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (15/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student has acquired the basic notions on the differential and integral calculus in several real variables, knows the basic notions and resolution methods for the more elementary ordinary differential equations, is able to use the principal results on vector fields. Furthermore, he or she is able to solve simple problems of optimization, both free and with constraints, to manipulate curves and surfaces, to compute Fourier series in one dimension.

Course Prerequisites

Differential and integral calculus in one variable. Linear algebra and geometry.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and practical activities.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists in a practical test and a theoretical test, both mandatory.

The practical test is a two-hour written test, with 6 open-answer questions of 5 points each. The test is passed with at least 15 points out of 30. The outcomes of the practical test are published on the web page of the course, 3/4 days after the test.

Students can replace the practical test with two ongoing tests. The first ongoing test is held in the middle of the course, and concerns the first half of the program. The second concerns the second part of the program (including the prerequisites contained in the first part) and is held in conjunction with the first complete winter session written test.

The two ongoing tests have the same modality as the complete written test. The second test is accessed with a minimum score of 15 in the first test.

In the first winter session, the student who has passed the first ongoing test is free to decide whether to take the second ongoing test or the complete test.

The students that pass the practical test may access the theoretical test. The theoretical test is held 7/10 days after the practical test. Only in the exam sessions of january and june the student may postpone the theoretical test to february and july, respectively. The theoretical test may be written or oral, and in any case consists in 3/4 questions which evaluate the student’s knowledge on definitions, examples, statements and proofs of theorems. The relevance of the answer with respect to the question, the ability to synthesize information and the correct use of language are also evaluated. The theoretical test may be written and, in this case, has a one hour duration. It is graded immediately after the test itself.
