Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to develop a systemic and in-depth understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with advanced manufacturing, with a specific focus on industrial automation and the digital factory paradigm. The teaching approach is designed to provide students with an integrated perspective on contemporary production processes, emphasizing the interplay between enabling technologies, organizational models, and digital tools.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

Analyze and determine the optimal level of automation for a production system, based on its operational and strategic characteristics;

Select and apply methodologies and technologies for the design and implementation of integrated and automated manufacturing systems;

Use, at an introductory level, the industrial simulation software FlexSim to model and optimize complex production flows.

This course contributes to the learning objectives of the Master’s Degree Program in Management Engineering, particularly within the technological-industrial domain. It provides advanced competencies for diagnosing and solving issues related to the efficiency, flexibility, and digitalization of manufacturing systems.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of manufacturing technologies and processes (as covered in the Manufacturing and Technologies course)

Teaching Methods

Lectures, practical exercises, seminars and/or factory visits, laboratory demonstrations.

Assessment Methods

The examination consists of a written test comprising 4 to 5 questions (among open-ended questions and numerical exercices) designed to assess the student's theoretical understanding. The allotted time is typically 90 minutes. The final score is determined by the sum of the points awarded for each individual question.

Attending students have the option to develop and present a group project. The submission and oral presentation of the project, carried out during the semester and supported by periodic progress meetings, may contribute to the final grade with an additional score of up to 4 points (provided that the written exam is passed).
