The course aims to introduce and familiarize the student with the fundamental problems concerning telecommunication networks and their performance evaluation, in order to enable them to operate in this area both in industrial and research environments.
General knowledge of statistics, networks and networking protocols.
Lectures; practical lessons.
If the course is taught in a mixed mode or remotely, changes could be made compared to what is stated in the syllabus to make the course and exams adapted also to these ways.
Written test and oral with exercises and questions on theory.
Introduction: classification of networks and commutation techniques. Introduction to the queueing theory. Analysis of the performance of multiplation systems and ARQ techniques, priority systems. Markovian networks and Quality of Service (QoS) of a network. Optimisation of networks: shortest paths. Network Design of packet-switched networks: parameters definition and constraints; optimum topology, flow and capacity allocation (Flow Deviation algorithm). Congestion and Rate control techniques: Hop Level (CQL), Rate Control (Token Bucket), End-to-end (TCP). Reliability and protection of telecommunications networks, protection methods. Simulations of Telecommunications Networks; generating pseudo-random numbers, statistical analysis of results. Examples of discrete-event simulators; the M/M/1 queue and the Network Simulator (NS). Wireless Networks - Ad Hoc/Mesh networks.
Telecommunication Networks Laboratory: pseudo-random number generation as a support to network simulation, simulation of networking protocols, network emulation (architectures and protocols), mathematical models for the optimization of fixed and wireless networks.
