Course Objectives

The student will develop knowledge and ability to understand the working principles of renewable technologies and deal with the design of energy systems powered by renewable sources

Course Prerequisites

Background in Applied Physics and Fluidmachinery

Teaching Methods

Lectures, classroom exercises, computer lab exercises.

Assessment Methods

At student's choice, oral test on course syllabus or project on Trnsys platform

Contents

Energy sources
Solar energy
- solar radiation;
- flat plate collectors;
- evacuated tube collectors;
- solar cooling (absorption refrigeration machines; adsorption refrigeration machines; DEC systems);
- air collectors;
- concentrating collectors (solar thermodynamic);
- photovoltaic modules.
Wind energy
- wind resource;
- aerodynamics of wind turbines (Betz theory, vortical impulsive theory);
- horizontal axis wind turbines;
- vertical axis wind turbines;
- off-shore power plants
Hydropower
- Water resource;
- run-of-river hydroelectric plants;
- water turbines;
- wave exploitation;
- exploitation of tides;
- exploitation of sea currents;
- OTEC cycles
Geothermal energy
- geothermal resource;
