Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims at providing fundamental knowledge in macroeconomics, meant to support the whole subsequent learning process in economics. Together with the Microeconomics, this course deeply characterizes in a distinctive way the degree program. As final outcomes of the course, the student should: know the definitions of the macro aggregates and their accounting relations; know the basic short-run theories and models of the macro-economy; be able to discuss the effects of the main fiscal and monetary policies; know the most relevant issues relating to open economy macroeconomics; have at least an introductory knowledge of long-run growth topics. During the course, some necessary mathematical tools are reviewed.


Course Prerequisites

Contents

Macroeconomic aggregates, national accounting and price indices. Theories of consumption and savings, of investment and of the demand for money. Portfolio theory (introduction). Theories of the labour market. Income-expenditure model; IS-LM model; agggregate supply-demand models. The role of price expectations. Exchange rates and the open economy. Fiscal and monetary policies. Long run growth (introduction).
