Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the students with essential knowledge of the history of art and architecture from the 4th to the 15th century in Italy and in the Euro-Mediterranean context. By learning the tools of the discipline – like the art-historical vocabulary or the technical and formal analysis – at the end of the course the students will be able to properly read and contextualize works of art and develop an autonomous criticism.

Course Prerequisites

No specific prerequisite is required.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with the aid of multimedia tools. Subject to the number and availability of participants, seminars and educational visits to museums and monuments will be possible.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam, the evaluation will be expressed in thirtieths. Starting from the images, the ability to critically analyze and contextualize works of art with the proper language will be tested. Written tests will also be possible.

For those who have the 12-ECTS educational activity in their curriculum, the final outcome will result from the average of the grades earned in the exams of Fondamenti di storia dell'arte europea and of Iconografia e iconologia.

Contents

The course will examine the main artistic and architectural episodes in Italy and in Europe from Late Antiquity to the 15th century, focusing on patronage, form, function, materiality and technique. Methodological issues related to periodization, terminology, historiography and artistic geography will be addressed during the lectures.
