Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student will have acquired a thorough knowledge of the historical, theoretical and methodological foundations of the discipline. In particular, he/she will grasp the principles of dramaturgy, scenography, organisation of the performance in relation to the actor and the audience. The student will moreover develop the main interpretative skills to establish the appropriate connections between the theatrical event and its historical-cultural context. The course aims at the acquisition of skills introducing to professions related to the theatrical field.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will take place through lectures with projections of audiovisual materials. Particular attention will be paid to dialogue with the student.

Assessment Methods

The examination at the end of the course will be oral and will be marked in thirtieths. It will be structured in the form of four questions covering the entire syllabus in order to check the students' acquisition of the notions taught in the course.

Contents

The course aims to investigate the connections between dramaturgy, scenography, and the organisation of the performance in relation to the actor and the audience in the classical age. The tragic genre on the Greek and Latin stages will be studied with particular attention to its special contents, its style and its cultural implications, in the Greek and Roman contexts. The comparative reading of "The Trojan Women" of Euripides and "The Trojan Women" of Seneca will be a in-depth historiographical analysis.
