Syllabus

Course Objectives

To acquire the methods and tools of comparative literature in order to approach the reading and analysis of texts from a perspective that combines literary theory and literary history.

On the level of individual learning, the course will enable students to acquire a critical understanding of the contexts of production and circulation of contemporary literary texts from a theoretical and comparative perspective; to develop tools for literary analysis in an interdisciplinary and transcultural framework; to foster critical awareness in approaching literature; to enhance communication skills and the ability to promote literary heritage; to acquire specific competencies in the teaching of literature (reading and textual commentary); and to promote health, well-being, gender equality, and inclusion.

Course Prerequisites

Italian language

Teaching Methods

The lessons will be primarily lecture-based, but as the course progresses, students are expected to participate more actively, especially during the reading and analysis of texts.

The course will make use of slides and other teaching materials, which will be made available to students through the online learning platform.

Assessment Methods

The exam is oral, and the final grade—expressed on a scale of thirty—aims to assess the student’s command of the course content, their presentation skills, and their ability to reason critically through the reading and interpretation of literary texts.

Contents

The aim of this course is to provide students with the theoretical, formal, and interpretive tools necessary to study lyric poetry.

The course will be ideally structured in three parts. The initial sessions will focus on the theory and history of the lyric genre, engaging with the main theoretical models of poetry. The second and third parts will take a hermeneutic approach: in the second part, we will read and analyze "Ossi di seppia" (1925, 1928) by Eugenio Montale (1896–1981); the third part will be devoted to the reading of "Schiuma di quanti" (2021) by Durs Grünbein (1962–).

Required reading for attending students includes the complete reading of the following books:

• Eugenio Montale, Ossi di seppia, annotated edition by Pietro Cataldi and Floriana D’Amely, Milan, Mondadori

• Durs Grünbein, Schiuma di quanti (Quantum Foam), translated by Anna Maria Carpi, Turin, Einaudi

• Enrico Testa, Il libro di poesia, Macerata, Quodlibet

Required reading for non-attending students includes the complete reading of the following books:

• Eugenio Montale, Ossi di seppia, annotated edition by Pietro Cataldi and Floriana D’Amely, Milan, Mondadori

• Durs Grünbein, Schiuma di quanti, translated by Anna Maria Carpi, Turin, Einaudi

• Enrico Testa, Il libro di poesia, Macerata, Quodlibet

• Uberto Motta, «Lingua mortal non dice». Guida alla lettura del testo poetico, Rome, Carocci
