Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student will have acquired a thorough knowledge of the historical, theoretical and methodological foundations of the discipline. In particular, he/she will grasp the principles of dramaturgy, scenography, organisation of the performance. The student will moreover develop the main interpretative skills to establish the appropriate connections between the theatrical event and its historical-cultural context. The course aims at the acquisition of skills introducing to professions related to the theatrical field.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will take place through lectures with projections of audiovisual materials. Particular attention will be paid to dialogue with the student.

Assessment Methods

The examination at the end of the course will be oral and will be marked in thirtieths. It will be structured in the form of four questions covering the entire syllabus in order to check the students' acquisition of the notions taught in the course.

Contents

The course aims to investigate the connections between dramaturgy, scenography and performance organization in the Medieval and Renaissance contexts. The scenographic aspects of the performance culture of the period will be at the core of the course. We will study the transition from the loci deputati, specific of the paratactic and simultaneous vision of the great cycles of miracles, mysteries and passions, to the mobile scene of the court spectacle of the ancien regime, characterized by the advancement of stage technology, passing through the stagings of Filippo Brunelleschi's sacred representations in Florence, as the point of contact between the Medieval and Renaissance conceptions of spectacle.
