Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course will provide a basic knowledge of the evolution of historical sources and archives between the Middle Ages and the contemporary age. This knowledge will allow students to master the main techniques of archival management and several research tools which facilitate access to the archival sources.


Course Prerequisites

No prerequisite.


Teaching Methods

The course is based on lectures, with constant attention to stimulating requests for clarification and in-depth learning. During the course, some qualified experts from the document sciences sector will be invited to present with concrete examples the themes and methods covered in the lectures.


Assessment Methods

The end-of-course exam will take place in oral form; the final vote will be expressed out of 30. Three questions will verify the complete knowledge of the exam program and the key concepts and problems of archival science.


Contents

The lessons will focus on the following topics:

1. history of archives;

2. theoretical concepts of archival science (idea of archive and document, life stages of an archive, documentary selection);

3. facilities, practices and norms of archival conservation in Italy

4. description and research tools, from early inventories to computer technologies.

For attending students, in addition to the reference texts, the exam program also includes lecture notes. The program for non-attending students includes, in addition to the reference texts for attending students, the additional learning materials listed in the Leganto reading list.

Communications to students will be sent via email through the e-learning platform. Therefore, students must promptly register for the course’s e-learning area. All students are required to regularly check the e-learning area and download the indicated materials.

Erasmus students or students with an Individualized Education Plan or Personalized Didactic Plan are invited to contact the instructor at the beginning of the course.
