Syllabus

Course Objectives

The goal of this course is to equip students with fundamental tools in economics to interpret and discuss current topics in political economy. Students will learn key concepts in economic theory and in the interpretation of empirical evidence to understand the processes and actors of economic policy decisions and comprehend their effects on economic and social development. At the end of the module, students will be able to use these fundament economic tools to frame discussions around key questions such as: Why do we observe distortions in markets (e.g., labor, goods, services), and how can the government intervene?


Course Prerequisites

Those required by the degree program.


Teaching Methods

The course will include lectures, in-depth studies, and class discussions on current issues, aimed at understanding the practical relevance of the theories studied.


Assessment Methods

The exam will consist of a written test that includes true/false questions, multiple-choice questions, and open questions/exercises. The test is designed to verify students' understanding of the models and their ability to apply them to interpret the characteristics of the governmental and economic systems.

Module 2: Markets and economic theory

The second part of the course will cover the study of various markets, including:

Labor markets

Goods and services markets

Financial markets


The course will also discuss markets’ successes and failures and how the government can (try to) fix markets' distortions.
