Teaching Methods

The teaching will combine frontal lessons associated with in-classroom discussions, cooperative learning, study and critical presentations of research, in order to understand the language and the sociological perspective in the interpretation of society.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a 75-minute overall written test relating to both teaching modules (A and B) composed by:

- 18 closed questions (multiple choice) (9 for module A and 9 for module B) which assign 3/5 of the evaluation mark;

- 4 open questions with a short answer (2 for module A and 2 for module B) that assign 2/5 of the evaluation mark.

The final vote is expressed in thirtieths.

The exam allows to evaluate:

- the knowledge and the understanding of the concepts;

- the level of detail in the study;

- the ability to synthesize;

- the ability to establish connections.

Contents

In the second module, in continuity with what was addressed in the first, the complexity of contemporary society is explored through a critical analysis of the sociological theories and concepts presented in the first module, through the study and discussion of selected research contributions and materials drawn from classical and contemporary authors and sociological research on contemporary social phenomena.

Furthermore, the methodological tools to read, understand and analyse empirical research of social nature will be provided.

Among the topics that will be explored are deviance, organizations, groups and movements, work, inequality, religion, economic structure, family, gender.

Participating students will also be given the opportunity to analyse a decision case on a social problem using sociological criteria and theories as group work.

More information

The programme is valid for both attending and non-attending students.

During the course the reference texts will be discussed in the light of critical re-readings, in-depth study of the more complex concepts and the use of research examples: attendance therefore enables a more complete preparation, but does not replace the study of the texts.

All students are required to periodically consult the e-learning area of the course and download the materials indicated.

Erasmus students and students with PDP or PEI are invited to contact the lecturer at the beginning of the course.
