Contents

Module A presents an introduction to the main classical and contemporary sociological theories. In particular, after having defined the elements that characterize the origin of the discipline and the definition of the social contexts in which sociology was born and developed, the theories of the founding fathers of sociology such as Comte, Durkheim, Marx, Weber and Simmel will be presented. Subsequently, the main sociological orientations of the twentieth century will be addressed and, in particular, the Chicago School and symbolic interactionism, structural-functionalism, critical theory of society, phenomenological sociology and ethnomethodology.

Finally, some contemporary theories related to the analysis of post-modernity and globalized society will be introduced.

For each author, one or more relevant works will be analysed in order to convey to the student the language and perspective of sociological analysis.
