By the end of the course, students will have developed a problematic approach to nineteenth- and twentieth-century history: they will grasp its fundamental lines of development and turning points; they will master appropriate categories of historical analysis for the topics covered; they will be aware of the plurality of historiographical interpretations of the topics addressed; they will be able to establish connections and make comparisons between contemporary and subsequent contexts; they will have acquired specific and appropriate conceptual and lexical tools. They will therefore have learned to reason historically, overcoming a naive approach to historical events, and developing skills useful for understanding the present.
The course of Contemporary History requires a basic knowledge of the nineteenth and twentieth century global history.
Teaching will be delivered through lectures, but with a focus on discussion and dialogue with students, who will be able to formulate suggestions for further study and discussion during the lessons.
The exam consists of a written test (candidates must answer two open-ended questions and ten closed-ended questions). The grade is expressed in thirtieths.
Global history from the age of imperialism to the end of the Cold War. The First World War and the Russian Revolutions. The postwar period and the various stabilizations. The crisis of 1929 and the Great Depression. The rise of German Nazism and the end of a world. The Second World War. The Cold War and decolonization. Consumer society. The fall of communism in Europe.
All students are required to periodically consult the course's e-learning area and download the indicated materials. The program is valid for both attending and non-attending students.
