Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (16/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Fundamental knowledge of the historical periods under consideration and of some of the main figures of Western thought. Understanding of the major philosophical issues in relation to their historical context, their significance, and their development. Ability to apply philosophical tools to one's own field of study and to contemporary reality.

Course Prerequisites

Willingness to broaden one's cultural horizons through a comprehensive understanding of the history of philosophy, which the course aims to structure and deepen through selected themes and authors. However, the student must verify or refine this understanding by integrating lessons and study with a personal interpretative journey.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activities will be conducted through frontal lectures, but with particular emphasis on discussion and direct dialogue with the students. Additionally, during one of the classes, the film "Judgment at Nuremberg" (Stanley Kramer, 1961) will be screened.

If the teaching is conducted in a blended or online format, modifications may be introduced compared to what is stated in the syllabus to ensure that the course and exams are accessible in these formats as well.

Assessment Methods

The final exam will be conducted orally, and the evaluation will be graded out of thirty. The examination will consist of three questions covering the entire program to assess students' acquisition of the concepts taught during the course. There are no intermediate tests planned.

In addition to this, they must fill any gaps in knowledge on the topics and authors covered by consulting any good high school-level history of philosophy textbook. Specifically recommended is: C. Esposito, P. Porro, "Filosofia" (three volumes), Laterza 2011. In any case, they should arrange their study plan with the professor during office hours or via email: giovanni.zucchelli@unibg.it.
