Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will acquire some of the distinctive methodologies and operational tools of Community Psychology for the promotion of individual and relational psychological well‑being in social contexts, adopting an ecological‑systemic and proactive perspective and focusing on resources and the promotion of individual, group, and community empowerment. The student should be able to critically analyze and articulate (in its central phases) an intervention to promote generative relationships in different life contexts, clearly defining the methodology according to the objectives, target groups, and contexts (family, school, organization, neighborhood, local community). At the end of the course, the student should therefore be able to:

  • Analyze life contexts from a multidimensional perspective, knowing how to grasp and enhance resources, detect critical issues, and promote change and social generativity;
  • Implement action-research participatory methods to promote social change through the use of specific work tools typical of Community Psychology, such as group work, community profiles, participatory multidimensional organizational analysis, and socio‑affective and environmental education.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the theoretical and practical foundations of Community Psychology, acquired during the first module of the course.

Teaching Methods

Lectures (with the support of PowerPoint slides), classroom discussions, case study presentations, group exercises, and supervision of fieldwork conducted in a workshop format.

The PowerPoint slides used during lectures, as well as any additional study materials, will be uploaded by the professor on the course’s e-learning page.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test lasting 60 minutes and includes 2 open-ended questions. These questions assess both the student’s mastery of terminology and conceptual knowledge related to the course topics, as well as their critical and reflective abilities, including analysis of concrete examples of project design within Community Psychology. The grade, expressed out of 30, will be combined with the grade obtained in the first module of the course to determine the final grade for the Community Psychology exam.

Exam results will be communicated to each student’s institutional email through the University’s online platform.

Contents

The course will present the main intervention methodologies, with particular attention to participatory action research. Topics will include: community analysis; participatory and creative group work methods; socio-emotional education in school settings; service learning and community engagement methodology; participatory multidimensional organizational analysis; and the promotion of environmental citizenship, supportive neighborhood.
