Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course is part of the new regulatory framework on the "Family Psychologist" and on the "Primary Care Psychologist".

At the end of the course, partly based on active and participatory teaching activities, students will acquire knowledge about Clinical Health Psychology and Psychosomatics, conceptualized through the biopsychosocial model. Students will also acquire basic knowledge on specific health settings where a Clinical Psychologist can work, and basic practical skills related to the process and methods of evaluation used in Clinical Health Psychology and Psychosomatics.


Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of clinical psychology.


Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons; Working Groups; Exercises on Clinical Cases and on Self-Report Measures used in Clinical Health Psychology and Psychosomatics


Assessment Methods

Multiple-choice written test (21 items, 1 point for each correct response) and written examination of two clinical cases (max 5 points each). Students will have 120 minutes to complete the exam. Additional points are granted for attending group activities and/or research projects.


Contents

Initially, the main topics of Clinical Health Psychology and of Psychosomatics will be presented, including its objectives and fields of application. Health behaviors (including the adherence to pharmacological treatments) and the role of personality variables on health and on the onset\course of physical illnesses will also be addressed.

Finally, the main health settings of Clinical Psychology (for example Psychocardiology, Psycho-Oncology and Psychology of Infertility), as well as the theories, common topics and methods of intervention used in Psychosomatics will be discussed.
