Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will be able to: 1) understand, describe, and summarize the main theories and empirical research developed in the field of memory and emotion; 2) discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the theoretical and empirical approaches that will be presented during classes; 3) critically assess the health psychology practices and interventions focused on the analysis of memory and emotional processes across the diverse social contexts.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of General Psychology.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will take place through both lectures and individual and group practical activities.

Assessment Methods

The assessment consists in an oral exam of three questions on the whole course programme. The evaluation of the exam will be based on the verification of the following abilities on the part of the student:
- knowledge of the topics addressed in the course;
- knowledge of the proper terminology and argumentative competence
- further individual exploration of the course topics.

Contents

The course will present an overview of the main issues connected to the study of memory and emotion within the theoretical framework of health psychology. Specifically, the following topics will be treated: history of psychology of autobiographical memory – contents, organisation and functions of autobiographical memory − theory and research on the relationship between autobiographical memory and autobiographical narrative –contemporary theories of emotions – the expression of emotion – the social sharing of positive and negative emotions – traumatic life experiences and their impact on health and psychological well-being.
