Course Objectives

To acquire linguistic skills (comprehension, translation, reading of a text in English) (B1 level) and an awareness of the role of language and poetry in the context of British Romanticism.

Course Prerequisites

A basic (secondary school) knowledge of English

Teaching Methods

Language workshops, lectures, but also discussion with students on the topics considered during the course.

Assessment Methods

The examination consists of a conversation on the topics of the course, with a special focus on the texts taken into consideration (reading of a passage, translation, contextualization), to evaluate the level of comprehension of a text in English (level B1).

The aim is the achievement of linguistic proficiency.

To access the oral exam, students must pass the written exam (B1 level). The written exam is a 50-minute test with multiple choice questions on grammar, vocabulary, listening comprehension and comprehension of written texts.

Students with a Cambridge FCE (or higher) or Trinity 8 (or higher) certificate are exempt from the written examination (information on the Faculty website). Students passing the written test need to take the oral exam within the following 18 months.

Contents

The course examines the role of poetry in the philosophical, social, political and aesthetic context British Romanticism, with a special focus on the reading and analysis of poetic and philosophical texts (level B1). A language workshop, with its own hours, is also available.
