Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (23/02/2026 - 06/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide the main concepts related to the methodologies and tools for 3D modeling of components and assemblies in the context of product development. The course foresees the use of 3D CAD systems for the modeling and simulation of virtual prototypes both in guided exercises and for the development of projects. At the end of the course, the student has a sharp idea of the product development process and knows how to master 3D modeling systems to develop products of industrial interest. The student is able to develop a conceptual project of a new product and to modify an existing product using the most suitable tools for the creation of its three-dimensional model.

Course Prerequisites

Industrial Technical Drawing

Teaching Methods

The teaching will take place through lectures and guided practical exercises for the use of 3D CAD systems. The exercises will be carried out allowing the student to work with increasing autonomy but with constant supervision and support.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of two parts to be taken in the same day:

1. realization and presentation of a product development project-work to be carried out in a group (max 3 people) on a pre-established theme (80% of the final grade)

2. oral examination on the contents of the lectures (20% of the final grade).

Contents

Role of product/process modeling in design and simulation systems. Techniques for geometric modeling of or rigid bodies: solid modeling, surface modeling, discrete modeling and knowledge-based modeling. Virtual prototype: realization and functionality. Role and techniques to simulate product and process during product development. Aesthetic aspects and rendering. Modeling and simulation of human body: virtual humans and digital human modeling.
