Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the module, students will have a fundamental understanding of the philosophy of technology, including: possible definitions of technology; the relation between philosophy of technology and philosophy of science; main theories of technology in analytic philosophy; theory of material artifacts; the relation between mind and technology in the study of cognition; the relation between technology and affectivity; the impact of technology on our personal identity and our existence.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lectures mixed with discussions in class, and possibly student presentations.


Assessment Methods

The final assessment will be based on an oral examination on the contents of the module.

The examination will consist in three questions. Each question will count 10 points for the final mark of the module (passing mark: 18/30).

The final mark of the module will count 50% towards the final mark of the course. The other 50% comes from the module on the Philosophy of Risk (Dr. Luca Zanetti). The final grade of the whole course will be the average of the grades obtained in the two modules.


ONLY FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS: The oral exam may be replaced by a short essay (3000/3500 words) on a topic related to the course. The topic must be agreed upon in advance with the instructors of the two modules.



Contents

Module 1: Philosophy of technology

In this module we will analyze the central issues in philosophy of technology, considered from a cognitive perspective. The module will dedicate particular emphasis to the relationship between technology and the human mind, from a cognitive and affective point of view. Some of the topics tackled in the module are:

What is a technological object?

What is the relation between mind and technology?

What is the relation between technology and power?

Are we natural born cyborgs?

How technology influences our cognitive and affective life?

Is technology neutral or value-laden?

This module is part of the course “Philosophy of Technology” that also includes the module “Philosophy of Risk”.

Attendance is not mandatory, but active participation to classes is encouraged.
