Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course offers students the opportunity:

- to know the developments of the medieval philosophical and scientific thought.

- to develop critical skills in the reading of medieval texts through the analysis of primary documents and sources.

- to acquire skills in the use of historical-philosophical analytical tools.

- to acquire a knowledge of the relationship between the history of medieval philosophy and science and the developments of contemporary culture.


The expected learning outcomes are:

- The ability to historicize medieval philosophical texts and locate them in their cultural and thought context.

- The ability to critically discuss the contents of medieval texts by integrating the historical and philosophical approach.

- Knowledge of the main perspectives of contemporary historiography of medieval philosophy and science.

- The ability to critically assess the relation between medieval and contemporary thought.



Course Prerequisites

No prerequisite is required in addition to those necessary to overcome the TVI.


Teaching Methods

Frontal lectures; reading, discussion and commentary of medieval texts (and of relevant secondary literature); presentation of papers from the students.


Assessment Methods

The assessment will take place through an interview with an oral exam and will include the writing of an essay (maximum 20 pages). The subject will be agreed with the teacher. The final mark will be out of thirty points.


Contents

The course deals with the topic: MEDICINE AND PHILOSOPHY IN MEDIEVAL EUROPE

- The link between philosophy and medicine in its Greek and Arabic roots.

- The translation of medical and philosophical texts into Latin

- The teaching of medicine at the University

- The controversy between philosophers and physicians on embriology and generation

- Thories of embryo ensoulment and the role of bodily complexio

More information

No difference is foreseen between attending and non-attending students. Students are encouraged to discuss attendance requirements with lecturers.

Further materials (texts and bibliographical indications) will be provided during the course and made available in digital format on the course website. The professor's communications to the students of the course will take place via email and via the e-learning area, to which all students must therefore promptly register. All students are required to periodically consult the e-learning area of the course and download the indicated materials.

Erasmus students and students with PDP or PEI are invited to contact the teacher at the beginning of the courses.
