Overview

Primo Semestre (23/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The module aims to develop skills in close and analytic reading of philosophical texts, taking into account both lexical choices and argumentative content. Starting from a brief but conceptually rich text, we explore its reception as well as the exegetical tradition regarding some points of particular philosophical importance.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the most important doctrines in the history of ancient philosophy and a certain argumentative ability are required.

Teaching Methods

Within a seminar format, the two instructors will take turns in presenting the set text in relation to the ancient and modern commentarial literature. Students are encouraged to participate actively in the discussions, and such presentations as they might propose will be taken into account in assigning an overall assessment.

Assessment Methods

The oral examination that is foreseen by the regulations may be integrated with presentations in class or with a short (5-10 thousand word) dissertation on one of the themes of the set text.

Contents

The brief Platonic dialogue Euthyphro (in Tredennick's English translation) is the primary object of study. In this text, various approaches to defining the notion of piety (to hosion) are aired, none of which satisfies Socrates' requirement for necessary and sufficient conditions independent of subjective factors. Though the dialogue ends in aporia, the phases of the discussion bring to light some important characteristics of conceptual enquiry in general.
