Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (16/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the skills and tools necessary to translate, understand and comment in autonomy the texts of medieval Romance literature.

Course Prerequisites

It is strongly recommended that students have already taken an exam in Romance Philology and attended the workshop "I manoscritti delle letterature del medioevo europeo" (prof. Francesco Lo Monaco). For those who have never taken an exam in Romance philology, it may be useful to read Alberto Varvaro, Prima lezione di Filologia", Bari, Laterza, 2012.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and seminars, use of digital philology tools.

Assessment Methods

Assessment will take the form of an oral exam in which students will discuss their written paper containing the translation and analysis of the chosen text and the entries included in Thibaut de Champagne's collaborative dictionary (to be submitted 15 days before the exam).

Contents

Translating and commenting old French lyric poetry.

The first part of the course will be devoted to a brief review of the fundamentals of old French grammar and literature and to illustrate, with concrete examples, how to translate and comment lyric texts in old French, especially the chansons by Thibaut de Champagne. In the second seminar part, students will be invited (individually or in groups depending on the number of course participants) to translate and comment a text by Thibaut de Champagne. Students are also expected to contribute to certain entries in Thibaut de Champagne's collaborative dictionary hosted on Lexonomy (www.lexonomy.eu).

More information

The course will be held in Italian during the second semester (third and fourth sub-periods). Since this is a seminar course, attendance is an essential and important part of the course. Students who are unable to attend must contact the lecturer to establish an alternative syllabus.
