Syllabus

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the following Learning Outcomes will be reached:


  • An understanding of the evolution of the history of dress and fashion within the cultural context of the Western world, from the Renaissance to today.
  • Knowledge of the stylistic and aesthetic evolution, with the aim of recognizing the continuity and the changes that happen over the eras leading to the present day.
  • The ability to carry out basic research in the field of fashion studies.

Course Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for the course. However a basic knowledge of History of Art would be helpful.


Teaching Methods

Frontal lectures with the aid of multimedia devices. Seminar/workshop moments with student involvement. Visits from fashion sector professionals will be scheduled in.


Assessment Methods

  • Written exam with multiple choice and open answer questions based on the course program covered in class and on the exam text books. The exam will last one hour and thirty minutes. The mark given for each question depends on the type of answer required. The final mark will be out of 30.
  • Marking criteria: ability to recognize the various phases of the history of fashion studied in class. The comprehension of the text books assigned for the exam.

For PDP students, it will be possible to take an alternative exam, for example an oral exam, each student will discuss the modality individually with the professor.

For Erasmus students, it will be possible to arange an alternative exam (for example an essay in English) according to specific situations.


Contents

The History of Dress and Fashion course provides the underpinning knowledge of the subject via a chronological survey from the Renaissance to the 21st century in the Western world. Particular attention will be given to the aesthetic evolution, the industrialization of fashion, the cultural context that sparks a continuous renewal of the thinking around appearances. Such themes will help to develop critical thinking about the world of fashion.

The 48 lesson hours will be split into 3 parts:

Part 1:

The history of dress and fashion from the 16th and the 17th centuries

Part 2:

The history of costume and fashion from the 18th and 19th centuries

Part 3:

The history of dress and fashion from the 20th and 21st centuries
