Syllabus

Course Objectives

1) Disciplinary objectives (official course taught by the lecturer)

The aim of the course is to develop proficiency in the language (C1+ level, as described by the CEFR).

At the end of the course, students:

  1.   will be familiar with intercultural tourism models applied to translation;
  2.   will be able to perform contrastive analysis between English and Italian and apply the meta-model for text analysis for translation purposes;
  3.   will be able to understand complex authentic texts in English taken from the tourist industry, also in digital format, and translate them into Italian from an intercultural mediation perspective

2) Instrumental objectives (practical classes/AAL)

At the end of the course, students will also have acquired, deepened and improved their instrumental competence in the four communicative skills at C1+ level of the CEFR for the English language, as well as their translation skills (English-Italian). To this end, it is essential (although not formally compulsory) to attend the dedicated language learning activities (AAL)


Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the English language equivalent to level C1 of the European Framework of Reference (CEFR).


Teaching Methods

1) Disciplinary competences (official course taught by the lecturer)

Lectures and seminars held by professional translators and use of multimedia technologies.

2) Instrumental competences (practical classes/AAL)

Assessment Methods

Learning verification

The examination consists of 2 parts: 1) written component; 2) oral examination (only accessible after passing the computerised test

1) Written component (90 minutes): Listening; Reading; Use of English and Translation of a short text from Italian to English.

The written test may only be taken on completion of Module A (first semester) + Module B (second semester).

The written examination is preparatory to the oral examination: the student cannot take the oral examination without having passed the written one.

The result of the computerised examination (passed level) is valid for 18 months.

2) Oral examination: interview on the topics covered in the course. The examination consists of a discussion in English on the course topics: at least three questions will be asked in order to assess the acquisition of the course content.

Evaluation criteria

The assessment criteria for the computer-based test are: 1. linguistic accuracy; 2. lexical and register accuracy;

The assessment criteria for the oral test will take into account expressive skills, lexical, morphosyntactic, pragmatic and phonological correctness and disciplinary competence.

IIn particular, the assessment will be divided into five bands:

  •   Excellent (30 cum laude) - Knowledge and skills fully acquired and applied with precision, effectiveness and autonomy. No mistakes.
  •   Very good (30-27) - Very sound knowledge and skills, applied correctly and with confidence. Minor and non-recurring mistakes.
  •   Good (26-24) - Adequate knowledge and skills, with some uncertainty or imprecision. Presence of not serious or systematic mistakes.
  •   Sufficient (23-18) - Basic knowledge and skills acquired but applied partially or with evident mistakes. Sufficient general understanding.
  • Insufficient (less than 18) - Insufficient knowledge and skills not adequately developed. Numerous mistakes affecting the success of the task

Contents

1) Disciplinary content (official course taught by the lecturer)

During the course, the theory and practice of tourism translation through an intercultural communicative approach will be explained. Authentic tourist texts will be analysed for translation purposes. A series of exercises and contrastive analyses between English and Italian will be carried out in order to prepare students for translation practice according to linguistic and intercultural mediation techniques.
