Syllabus

Course Objectives

  • Understand the specific features related to risk management in healthcare.
  • Identify and implement the most appropriate risk mitigation and response strategies.
  • Be able to identify the main causes of clinical risk and propose the best ways to address them.
  • Use tools and models for effective clinical risk management.

Course Prerequisites

No specific requirements. It is preferable that participants already have some knowledge of business management in healthcare.


Teaching Methods

  • Theory: Lectures supported by slides and case studies.
  • Practice: Practical exercises based on real cases and simulated scenarios.

Assessment Methods

Written exam including theoretical questions and practical exercises.


Contents

1.Risk in Healthcare and Clinical Risk

  • Definitions and perspectives: stakeholders involved in healthcare risk
  • Measuring the "degree of riskiness" of a system
  • Tools adapted to healthcare for clinical risk analysis: Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Mode, Causes and Effects Analysis (FMECA), and Healthcare FMEA (HFMEA)

2.Risk Mitigation and Response Strategies

  • Response strategies: avoid, reduce, transfer (e.g., insurance), accept
  • Development of standardized action plans: clinical protocols, operating procedures, checklists (e.g., WHO surgical checklist)
  • Implementation of the Risk Management Plan
  • Role of professionals and management in change management

3.Risk Monitoring and Review (6 hours)

  • Definition of metrics for continuous monitoring: KPI (Key Performance Indicators) and KRI (Key Risk Indicators)
  • Risk reporting:
  • Internal communication (e.g., clinical risk committee, healthcare management)
  • External communication (Regional authorities, Ministry, accreditors)
  • Periodic review and update of the risk map
  • Role of internal audit and clinical audit

4. Economic and Financial Tools for Healthcare Risk Management

  • Brief overview of available tools
  • Risk-adjusted budgeting

5.Applied Case Studies

  • The SIMES system (Information System for Monitoring Healthcare Errors) – Lombardy Region
  • Case study analyses
