Syllabus

Course Objectives

The HTA course for Health Technology Engineers aims to provide a solid understanding of the principles and methodologies used to assess the effectiveness, efficiency, and clinical impact of healthcare technologies. The objectives include:

  • Understanding key HTA concepts such as cost-benefit analysis, health impact assessment, and safety evaluation.
  • Applying HTA tools to assess new technologies, medical devices, and healthcare interventions.
  • Examining the ethical and social implications of HTA-based decision-making.
  • Collaborating with healthcare professionals, economists, and policy makers to make informed decisions regarding resource management and the allocation of healthcare technologies.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

Teaching will take place through traditional lectures, with a strong emphasis on interaction and open dialogue with students, who will be encouraged to propose topics for further exploration or debate during class. The course will also include practical exercises focused on drafting a HTA report. To better structure these workshops, the instructor will identify topics based on those covered during the lecture cycle that offer the most stimulating points of interest, involving students through a learning-on-demand discussion model.

Assessment Methods

The assessment consists of a written exam and, optionally, a practical project. The optional project involves drafting an HTA report on an emerging healthcare technology. This project accounts for one-third of the overall grade. The written exam, which accounts for two-thirds of the final grade, includes one exercise for each part of the course content. The question related to the third part of the program may be answered by non-attending students or those who wish to retake the exam. In this case, the written exam will account for 100% of the final grade. In all cases, the overall grade is communicated only after passing the written exam.
