Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course consists in two macro-subjects: electrical circuit analysis and electrical machines. In the first part, main laws and theorems will be reviewed providing the essential tools for the analysis of the electrical circuits. In the second part, the students will gain a full understanding of the working principles ruling the four electrical machines (i.e., transformer, DC machine, induction machine and synchronous machine), as well as, their application fields.

The ability of reading and recognizing both electrical machine equivalent circuit and performance characteristics will also be developed.


Course Prerequisites

Math (trigonometric functions, complex number)

Physics (Electromagnetism)


Teaching Methods

Face-to-face lectures supported by Power Point presentations will be held.

Support material will be provided at the beginning of the course.

Attendance is not compulsory although it is strongly advised.


Assessment Methods

The exam consists in a written examination, which includes theory questions (open-ended questions). Every question will feature a score associated to its complexity level and each question’s score is going to be indicated.

The test is considered successful if the score is higher than 18 over 30.


Contents

The course is composed by five modules:

  1. Fundamental Concepts: Electrical Engineering Laws, Principles of Electromechanical Energy Conversion, Conductor Materials, Ferromagnetic Materials, Permanent Magnets, Insulating Materials, Losses and Efficiency, Cooling Systems, Electrical Machines Classification, Windings.
  2. Transformer: Working Principle, Manufacturing, Ideal Transformer at no-load and under load, Equivalent Circuit, Real Transformer at no-load and under load, No-load Test and Short-Circuit Test, Efficiency and Voltage Drop, Parallel Transformers
  3. DC Machine: Manufacturing, Excitation Systems, Carbon Brushes-and Commutator, Modelling and Equations, DC Motor Working Principle, Torque-Speed Curve, Speed Regulation, Losses and Efficiency, DC Generator Working Principle, DC Generator at no-load and under load, Armature Reaction, Current-Voltage Curve
  4. Induction Machine: Manufacturing, Squirrel Cage and Wound Rotor, Modelling, Rotation Magnetic Field, Synchronous Speed, Induction Motor Working Principle, Slip, Equivalent Circuit, Losses and Efficiency, No-load and Blocked Rotor Tests, Speed-Torque Curve, Speed Regulation
  5. Synchronous Machine: Manufacturing, Excitation Systems, Salient and No-Salient Wound Rotors, Surface and Interion Mounted Permanent Magnet Rotors, Synchronous Motor Working Principles, Start-up via a damper cage, Start-up via inverter, Losses and Efficiency, Electromagnetic Torque, Torque-Speed Curve, Synchronous Generator Working Principle, Armature Reaction, Generator Parallel Operations
